The lubrication system in most of the gear boxes is self-contained, positive and automatic at all speeds of operation and in either direction of rotation. Adaptable units are provided with breather, oil level indicator and drain plug and it must be ensured that they are correctly positioned. Other units incorporate a dipstick for oil level checking.

Gear box must be filled with correct grade of lubricant, not exceeding the specified level, as over filling causes oil churning, resulting in overheating and leakage.

Check the oil level by means of the dipstick or oil level plug and maintain the required level with recommended grade of oil, if found less. Ensure that the breathers are clean and operating properly. Care should be taken not to paint over the breathers. Otherwise, pressure will build up, resulting in oil leakage. On units having grease lubrication bearings, grease the same with the help of grease gun or screw-in lubricator.

डिपस्टिक या तेल स्तर प्लग के माध्यम से तेल स्तर की जाँच करें और यदि आवश्यक हो तो तेल की अनुशंसित ग्रेड के साथ आवश्यक स्तर बनाए रखें। सुनिश्चित करें कि ब्रेड्स साफ और ठीक से काम कर रहे हैं। ब्रेस्ट्स के ऊपर पेंट न करने का ध्यान रखा जाना चाहिए। अन्यथा, दबाव का निर्माण होगा, जिसके परिणामस्वरूप तेल रिसाव होगा। ग्रीज़ स्नेहन बियरिंग वाली इकाइयों पर, ग्रीस बंदूक या स्क्रू-इन-स्नेहन की मदद से समान करें।
